To Amazon Payments from openletters.org

Dear Amazon Payments,

I’m writing about your new policy that now requires all users of Amazon Payments to supply a TIN, despite the fact that the IRS only requires you to file a 1099-K for those users receiving payments above certain thresholds ($20,000 or 200 payments per year).

I’m writing to ask whether you plan in the future to separate outgoing and incoming payments into two different services.

I would like to continue using the Amazon Flexible Payment service, to fund Kickstarter projects among other things, but I am unwilling to supply my TIN solely on the basis of your company policy, which I regard as too liberal with respect to my identity information.

I’m hoping that I’m not the only one who feels uncomfortable about this information request and that Amazon is interested in taking steps to retain people like me as customers of the Amazon Flexible Payments service.

Thanks for your attention.
